Okay. So I realise that I said I was going to watch two films the other day. You know what? I did watch two films. But it turns out that the film that I was going to watch (today’s film) my mum had already watched and wasn’t overly keen on it. So I watched Inglourious Basterds with her instead, one that I’ve already reviewed (read that review here). She didn’t like it. Typical. And then yesterday I got distracted by Top Gear and Britian’s Got Talent and The Voice…yeah, Saturday does that to me. So, I ended up not being able to watch this film until now. But there we go. Such is life. Hope the wait was worth it!
Eat Pray Love. A woman realises that she isn’t happy within her marriage, so gets divorced and goes travelling in order to find herself.
When I asked my mum what she thought about it, she answered ‘Ummmm, it’s deep’. The way she said that told me that no, she did not like it. And so I was determined to like this film. I wanted to think to myself ‘yes, I have just enjoyed a deep movie, and therefore I am a deep person’. That thought appealed to me very much.
This film was most certainly deep…
And for the most part, I really did enjoy this film. The story was a little bit choppy and confusing at times, but that didn’t stop me from liking it. What I mean by that is that I would be watching it, something would happen and then something else would happen and I wouldn’t know how they got there or what time span had passed. And I did find it hard to follow at times. But it was moving. And I did like it.
It was the ending that bothered me. Warning: Spoiler alert! So, yeah, I’m happy she found love and all that jazz. That’s fine. It’s just who it was. I don’t know what it was, because my mum is adamant that it was a lovely ending and that it was a refreshing ending…but the guy just seemed like a creep to me. I mean, I don’t mind if they’re not attractive (and to me, this guy was not), but you know…I looked at him and saw a sleazeball. Is that bad of me?
Julia Roberts though was fantastic. But then again, when isn’t she? She is known to be a brilliant actor, so why does it surprise me that yet again she’s done a magnificent job. Her character annoyed me though. Maybe that’s just me, but I really wanted her to stay with her husband…or even the boyfriend. I liked them. But there you go. Each to their own.
One thing I must say for this film is that it is beautiful to look at. I mean, seriously, I’ve seen some pretty films, but this quite possibly tops it off. Well, okay, no. The Tree of Life is the winner of that award (sadly I never managed to review this film, but I would totally recommend it) but this is a very close second. Every shot was sensational. There was nothing ugly in this film. Nothing. Just pure wonderfulness. Amazing.
The one thing that left me a bit blah was the length of the film. It was pretty long. Not the longest I’ve seen, but towards the end I felt it start to drag. The appeal had left me (possibly because of that guy, but who knows?) and it just didn’t come back. I tried so hard to get myself immersed back into it, but sadly it didn’t happen. So, yeah, maybe it should have been a little shorter. I don’t know. That could just be me.
So anyway, would I recommend this film? For those that like moving, aesthetically beautiful films, then yes. This most definitely the film for you. But for those who like things that actually happen in a film, then maybe not. Because honestly, not too much happens. But that’s okay. I like films like that when they’re done well. And this film was done well. So it was worth watching. Apart from the creep. He wasn’t worth watching. But the rest was. Honest.
A very nice review, again you made me want to see the film in question….could you please stop doing that?
Haha NO! No I will not! This is my aim of this blog…to get people to see the amazing films I watch and avert them from the terrible…
That being said, I’m not sure the latter is working…
(oh no, my comment didn’t load, silly internet, try again) – but totally agree with you, Julia Roberts nails everything she does, even if it’s a slightly predictable lovey-dovey film. But of course, it is indeed pretty to watch with all the colours…and James Franco isn’t hard to look at either!
The colours are just spectacular in this film…it’s quite scary!
And yeahhhh…James Franco…pretty!
Thanks for reading!
